Spiritual Places of Karnataka

Most of the major religions of India have flourished in Karnataka and as such one witness a profusion of pilgrimages across the length and breadth of the state. These religious places are held in high reverence and pious devotees from distant lands come here to seek blessings. The majority of sacred pilgrimages owe allegiance to Hinduism even though Jain religious places are found in many regions. Shravanabelagola, Dharmasthala and Karkala are prominent Jain pilgrimages of Karnataka.

Atmalinga Temple

Location: Gokarna, Karnataka.
Dedicated To: Vinayaka, Chandikeswara, Adi Gokarneswara and Dattatreya.
Get there: Goa is the nearest airport. The nearest railhead is at Hubli. Karwar is 60 kms by road.

Six feet tall lingam is a specialty of here. According to legend, Lord Ganapathi tricked Ravana into putting down the Linga afterlong penance.But Ravana was not capable to lift the linga from the earth again and after that the linga came to be well-known as Mahabala.

Bull Temple

Location: Bangalor

Non Hindus are not allowed in the temple. It faces the Shiva temple.The temple is busy always with some ceremony or other going on. On weekends there are musicians who are performing at the temple. The Bull Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva's vehicle, Nandi the bull.

The Chamundi Temple is one of the most famous temples in Karnataka,India. It is a 1000 year old temple dedicated to Devi Chamundeshwari, who is a form ofa form of Durga. This temple is Located on top of the 3000 ft high Chamundi Hill. Dasara is the famous festival of this temple and this is also a right period to visit this temple. Get there: Hassan is well connected by roads and railways. You can get to Belur from Hassan by the KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) buses. There is no airport at Hassan and the closest airport is at Bangalore or Mysore. There are private buses operating from Belur to Hassan.

The Cennakesava temple stands in a compound with several smaller temples and a pond. It is situated on the Yagachi River at Belur. It was previously the capital of the Hoysala rulers. Lord Vishnu is worshipped in this temple. The meaning of Chenna kesava is handsome kesava. People can visit every day to the temple and take the blessings of lord Vishnu.

Durga Temple

Location: Aihole, Karnataka

Get there: Mangalore Airport is near to kateel. The Nearest Railway station is Bagalkot. Aihole is connected by road to Pattadakal ,Badami (46 kms) Bangalore (438 kms). There are service busses plying between Mangalore and Kateel.

This temple is situated on the banks of River Nandini and has beautiful surroundings. The temple is surrounded by lush green fields and beautiful hills which attracts the visitors. Famous festival is Navratri.

Gokarnatheshwara Temple

The main deity of this temple is Shiva - the Shiva Linga is carved out of Amrutha Shile brought by Shri Narayana Guru from a place called Godarna where he got it under water. Hazara Temple

Location: Hampi, Karnataka

The name Hazara-Rama has been derived from the thousands of Rams carved on the temple walls. The temple is famous for its many Ramayana panels. The walls of this temple are designed with the designs of elephants and horses. It also shows beautifully decorated dancing girls and soldiers. This is one of the well celebrated Vishnu temples seen in Hampi.

Hidimbeshwar Temple

Location: Chitradurga, Karnataka
