Saunderbans Wildlife Sanctuary

Sunderbans wildlife sanctuary, most popular sanctuary and located in the Kolkata of the India. Extending over an area of 1,000,000 hectares is the world's largest delta, formed by the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghana rivers. It is the largest and safest habitat of almost 270 Bengal tigers. It actually has derived its name from the Sunderi tree. The Sunderbans Wildlife Sanctuary region has a tropical climate with hot summers and cold winters. Kanak, Haliday Island, Piyali, Kaikhali, Netidhopani etc are the major tourist spots of this place. Piyali is the gateway of this wildlife sanctuary. This national park is also noted for its conservation of the Ridley Sea Turtle.

General Information

Best time to visit: September to February

Flora: Red flowers of the Kankara and the yellow blooms of Khalsi are more founded in the Sundarbans wildlife sanctuary. The large floral population in Sunderbans consists of trees like Genwa, Dhundal, Passur, Garjan and Kankara. Apart from these trees, the tall and wide Goran trees cover almost the entire region.

Some important Fauna are as follows:

Mammals: Bengal tigers, Chital Deer, Rhesus Monkey, egrets, purple heron.

Birds: Osprey, Pallas's fish eagle, white-bellied sea eagle, grey-headed fishing eagle, peregrine falcon, Oriential hobby, northern eagle owl and brown fish owl, black-necked stork, greater adjutant stork, white ibis, swamp francolin, white-collared kingfisher, black-capped kingfisher and brown-winged kingfisher.

Reptile: Sunderbans Wildlife Sanctuary provides important habitat for a variety of reptiles including river terrapin, Olive Ridley, estuarine crocodile, monitor lizard, water monitor and Indian python, King Cobra, Rock Python and Water Monitor.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Kolkata at the distance of 112 kilometers.

By Rail: Canning is nearest railhead, at a distance of 48-kms.

By Road: Road transportation is available from Kolkatta for Namkhana (105-kms), Sonakhali (100-kms), Raidighi (76-kms), Canning (64-kms), and Najat (92-kms), which are all near the Sunderbans and have access to the riverine waterways leading to it.
